Modi Phones Oman, Kuwait Leaders As Gulf Crisis Deepens Amid US-Iran Conflict

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held separate telephone conversations with Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, extending India’s active diplomatic engagement as the security situation across West Asia continues to deteriorate.

The calls came just a day after Modi spoke with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Jordan — part of a sustained outreach effort as the conflict between Iran and the United States spreads further across the Gulf region. The escalation has triggered airspace closures and stoked growing concerns about oil supplies and energy infrastructure in the area.

In both conversations, Modi conveyed his concern over the ongoing attacks on Gulf countries and raised the issue of safety for Indian nationals living in the region. The Ministry of External Affairs had earlier expressed grave concern over the rapidly worsening situation in Iran and the broader Gulf, reiterating that the welfare of nearly one crore Indian citizens in the Middle East remains India’s foremost priority.

On Monday, Modi had spoken with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, expressing support for efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability. He condemned the attacks on both nations, emphasized the urgent need to return the region to normalcy at the earliest, and thanked the Saudi Crown Prince for his efforts in ensuring the safety of the Indian community during what Modi described as “difficult times.”

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also reached out to his counterparts across the region, holding discussions with officials in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and the UAE including Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Jaishankar additionally spoke with Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, signaling the breadth of India’s diplomatic engagement on all sides of the conflict.

With more than 700 fatalities reported in Iran and strikes continuing across Gulf nations and Israel, the conflict shows no signs of easing.
