Luxury Mercedes-Benz Buried At Funeral In China Sparks Outrage And Government Crackdown

Shangai: After a luxury Mercedes-Benz was put alongside the deceased person in China a sparkling debate has cropped up raising eyebrows about lavish funeral gesture questioning about excess and environmental impact.

The incident took place in Liaoning where the Jin Family arranged for the high end vehicle to be placed next to the grave as part of the funeral rites, as reported by South China Morning Post. Video in which an excavator lowering the car into a dug out area before it was covered with soil has gone viral in social media that captivated the eyes of netizens creating a buzz.

The vehicle in the video is said to be Mercedes-Benz S450L, worth around 1.5 million yuan (approx. Rs. 1.49 crore). The other thing that captivated the eyes of the people was the number plate that bore ‘8888’ which is regarded as a symbol of good fortune in Chinese culture, adding another layer of significance to the act.

On one hand where the family’s intention was hooked to traditional beliefs where items are offered to accompany the deceased in the after life, the scale of the gesture drew sharp criticism. The other side users in the social media got divided by this act of traditional beliefs.

As soon as the matter went viral on social media the authorities took the matter at hand and stepped in calling the act as a form of ‘feudal superstition’ and warning against such practices. The civil affairs department confirmed that the family had been reprimanded and an investigation was initiated.

Moreover, the Jin family issued a public apology and now they could even face financial penalties in addition to the cost of removing the buried vehicle, clearing the site and restoring the surrounding area.
