Veteran BJP Leader Datta Meghe Dies At 89, Gadkari Calls It Big Loss

New Delhi: Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Datta Meghe passed away at the age of 89 on Sunday, marking the end of a long and influential political career. According to a report by The Times of India (TNN), Meghe was a prominent figure in Vidarbha’s political and educational landscape, remembered for his decades of public service and grassroots connect.

Born on November 11, 1936, in Pawnar village of Maharashtra’s Wardha district, Meghe began his professional journey as a development officer with LIC before entering politics. Over the years, he built a career spanning more than five decades, during which he served in both Houses of Parliament, the Maharashtra Legislative Council, and held positions across multiple political parties. 

He first entered the Maharashtra Legislative Council in 1978 and went on to serve three consecutive terms until 1991. During this period, he held key roles including Minister of State for housing, civil supplies, and technical education. He later served as Cabinet Minister for energy and forests and also held the position of Leader of the Opposition in the Council. 

Meghe was also elected to the Lok Sabha multiple times, representing constituencies such as Nagpur, Ramtek, and Wardha. In addition to his parliamentary roles, he contributed significantly to the development of education and healthcare infrastructure in Maharashtra by establishing a wide network of institutions. 

Reacting to his demise, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari described it as a “great loss for Vidarbha,” acknowledging Meghe’s enduring contributions to the region.

He is survived by his family, including his son Sameer Meghe, who is a BJP MLA. His passing marks the conclusion of a distinguished public life dedicated to politics and social development.
