Mumbai: More than seven people were injured after a speeding BEST bus allegedly suffered brake failure and crashed into multiple vehicles in Andheri on Friday evening. According to preliminary estimates, around 14 vehicles were damaged in the accident. The injured were admitted to Cooper Hospital and nearby private hospitals for treatment.
According to a BEST spokesperson, the Route No. 242 bus was travelling from Millat Nagar towards Andheri (West) at around 6:10 pm. The accident occurred near the Andheri subway when the bus was taking a right turn from Caesar Road towards S.V. Road. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to collide with a car and an autorickshaw before crashing into several other vehicles.
The spokesperson said the bus had been hired on a wet lease and belongs to Mateshwari Urban Transport Company. It is operated from the Santacruz Depot.
Police said the out-of-control bus hit a total of 14 vehicles, including cars and autorickshaws. The damaged vehicles included nine autorickshaws, one three-wheeler tempo, and four private cars.
The 30-year-old BEST driver, Sahil Suryakant Sawant, along with the bus conductor, was taken to D.N. Nagar Police Station for questioning as part of the investigation.
According to BEST, one of the injured, 33-year-old Santalal Yadav, was discharged after receiving treatment at Cooper Hospital. Another injured person, 33-year-old Sakshi, was admitted to Millat Hospital for treatment. Doctors attending to both patients said they were in stable condition. The identities of the remaining injured persons were not known till late in the evening.
The accident comes amid a series of incidents involving BEST buses in recent months. In one such incident in Konkan Nagar, Bhandup, a commuter narrowly escaped after a BEST bus struck while reversing.
