More than a year after the horrific Pahalgam terror incident in April of last year, the Amarnath Yatra started on July 3. The reaction has been amazing. However, it appears to have encountered another issue, as several news reports indicate that, within days of the trip, the naturally occurring ice lingam, also known as the Baba Barfani, has melted by more than 90%.
The people, agriculture, and crops are all being impacted. Is it evident how climate change is affecting both them and the Amarnath Ice Lingam? There are questions. Only a week has passed since the start of the Amarnath Yatra. The ice lingam seems to be dissolving in just one week. A large amount of the ice lingam is said to have melted away.
Many devotees are still hoping to see the ice lingam, but just a small number have been allowed to do so thus far.
Inside the Amarnath cave, the Shiva Lingam naturally rises to a height of 12 feet at an elevation of 3,880 meters above sea level. However, the environment within the cave is also changing as a result of global warming, rising temperatures, and heatwaves, which is why the Amarnath Shiva Lingam is supposedly melting.
The “Shri Amarnath Barfani Langars Organisation” (SABLO) has expressed worry over the ice Shiva Lingam melting during the first week of the pilgrimage and has asked for a thorough scientific examination into this occurrence.
In order to save the delicate ecosystem surrounding the temple and the naturally occurring ice lingam, the group has also called on authorities to bolster environmental protection efforts.
