Datia Bypoll Fallout: Congress Rewards Key Leader As Uma Bharti Calls For BJP Introspection

Bhopal: The political fallout from the Datia Assembly by election in Madhya Pradesh continues to unfold, with the Congress rewarding a former BJP leader for his role in the campaign, while senior BJP leader and former Chief Minister Uma Bharti has called for a thorough review of her party’s defeat.

The Congress retained the Datia Assembly seat after its candidate, Ghanshyam Singh, defeated BJP’s Ashutosh Tiwari by 6,016 votes. The bypoll was held after former Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti lost his Assembly membership following his conviction in a bank fraud case.

Buoyed by the victory, the Congress has elevated a former BJP leader within the party organisation, crediting him for helping strengthen its campaign in the constituency. The move is being seen as both a reward for his contribution and a signal that the party is ready to give prominent responsibilities to leaders who have joined from rival camps.

The result has also sparked introspection within the BJP. In a candid social media post, Uma Bharti said the defeat had caused her “deep pain” and stressed that the party should not take comfort merely from an increase in its vote share. Instead, she urged BJP leaders and workers to honestly assess what went wrong in Datia.

Bharti also revealed that she could not campaign on the ground because of health issues but had tried to connect with voters through recorded messages and other outreach efforts. Her remarks have drawn attention as they come at a time when the BJP is reviewing its performance in one of the state’s most closely watched by-elections.

The Datia contest was politically significant because the BJP chose not to field six time MLA and former Home Minister Narottam Mishra, instead giving the ticket to first time candidate Ashutosh Tiwari. Following the defeat, speculation over internal differences and organisational lapses has intensified, although BJP leaders have publicly dismissed claims of factionalism.

The party has since dissolved its Datia district unit as part of its review process, indicating that it is taking the setback seriously. Meanwhile, Narottam Mishra has expressed support for the party’s candidate and maintained that the BJP remains united.

While the bypoll does not change the balance of power in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, it has undoubtedly shifted the political conversation. For the Congress, the victory offers fresh momentum and a morale boost. For the BJP, it serves as a reminder that even in its strongholds, electoral success cannot be taken for granted.
