BJP States Cut Official Convoys, Push Carpooling After PM Modi’s Fuel-Saving Appeal

BJP-ruled states have started trimming government vehicle use and pushing public transport after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on governments and citizens to conserve fuel. The backdrop: crude oil markets are volatile, the Middle East conflict is dragging on, and there is real anxiety about movement through the Strait of Hormuz. India imports a large chunk of its crude requirements and is keeping a close watch.

Uttar Pradesh moved first. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a 50 percent cut in government vehicle and VIP convoy use, restricted unnecessary official travel, and told departments to hold virtual meetings wherever possible.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta followed, asking ministers and staff to use public transport, carpooling, and shared mobility instead of official cars. The administration described the step as both a fuel-saving measure and a public message on responsible governance. The government is also reviewing internal travel schedules to reduce non-essential movement across departments.

In Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav cut his personal convoy from 13 vehicles to eight. Departments there have been asked to adopt energy-saving practices and raise public awareness about fuel use.

The Madhya Pradesh push got unexpected attention when a High Court judge reportedly cycled to court after the Prime Minister’s appeal a small moment that circulated widely on social media. Additional fuel-saving announcements from BJP-governed states are expected in the coming days.
