Sunny Deol Opens Up About Rs 55.99 Crore Debt: ‘I Was Happy Even When My Home Faced Auction’

Actor Sunny Deol has opened up about one of the most difficult financial phases of his career, revealing that he was once burdened with outstanding dues of Rs 55.99 crore and faced the possibility of his Juhu property being auctioned. Despite the financial pressure, Deol said he remained happy and continued to live his life without allowing the situation to affect him personally.

Speaking about the period, Deol explained that the money he owed was connected to his own financial commitments and investments. He stressed that he had not borrowed money from individuals and therefore did not feel that he was answerable to anyone personally. His approach, he said, was simply to sell some of his own assets and clear the outstanding amount.

The financial difficulties were linked in part to his decision to back and produce films during a period when his career was going through a challenging phase. Some of his projects, including directorial ventures, did not perform as expected, creating additional financial pressure.

The situation became public in 2023, when a bank issued an e-auction notice for Sunny Villa, Deol’s property in Mumbai’s Juhu area, over outstanding dues and interest amounting to Rs 55.99 crore. The property was subsequently at the centre of discussions surrounding his financial position, although the auction process was later withdrawn after steps were taken towards settling the dues.

Reflecting on those circumstances, Deol said his financial difficulties did not prevent him from being content. He maintained that he could not make every professional decision purely for money and that he continued to live his life despite being under debt.

His financial struggles came during a prolonged period in which he found it difficult to maintain the momentum generated by earlier successes. The actor had delivered major hits in the early 2000s, but his career subsequently went through a slowdown.

His fortunes changed significantly with the success of Gadar 2 in 2023, which brought him back into the spotlight and revived his career at the box office. Deol has since continued to take on prominent film projects.

Looking back, the actor’s account highlights how he dealt with a substantial financial setback by relying on his own assets to address his liabilities while maintaining that his personal happiness was not determined by his financial circumstances.
