
Moqi (China): India’s women’s team registered another emphatic victory at the Junior Asia Cup Hockey on Sunday, while the men’s team had to settle for a draw in their second match after opening the tournament with a resounding win. India are the defending champions in both categories.
India’s women’s and men’s teams played their second matches in two days. On Saturday, the women’s team defeated South Korea 4-1, while the Indian men’s team recorded a thumping 14-0 victory over Indonesia. On Sunday, the Indian women’s team continued their winning run by hammering Malaysia 11-1, but the men were held to a 3-3 draw by Japan.
Of India’s 11 goals in the women’s match, four came from field play through direct individual efforts, while five were scored from penalty corners and two from penalty strokes. India’s goal scorers included Pooja Sahu, Purnima Yadav, Binima Dhan, Krishna Sharma, Sukhveer Kaur, Geeta Yadav and Sanika Chandrakant Mane. Geeta won the Player Of The Match award. India are currently at the top of their group, with China and Japan in second and third place respectively. India will face Japan on Tuesday, September 8.
The men’s match saw India and Japan engage in a closely fought battle. However, India’s forwards were unable to dominate Japan in the same manner as they had against Indonesia. India captain Anmol Ekka scored twice, while Ashu Maurya added one goal. India will next face South Korea on Tuesday.
