BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari Poised to Become West Bengal’s Next Chief Minister

Kolkata: Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is set to take over as the next chief minister of West Bengal, according to party sources, marking the end of Mamata Banerjee’s long tenure as the state’s leader.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) plans to convene a meeting of its Legislative Party in Kolkata on Friday, May 8. At this gathering, Adhikari is expected to be formally elected as the leader of the BJP’s legislative party in the state assembly, paving the way for government formation following the party’s decisive victory in the recent West Bengal elections.

Sources indicated that BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya would propose Adhikari’s name for the position, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah announcing it during the meeting.

Adhikari, recognized for his strong grassroots connections and prior administrative experience, stood out as the BJP’s most prominent face in the campaign. He cemented his status by defeating Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for a second time, this occasion in her Bhabanipur stronghold, and with a substantially larger margin than in their previous contest.

In the 2021 elections, Adhikari had defeated Banerjee in Nandigram, a seat that gained national attention amid major protests. This time around, he not only retained Nandigram but also triumphed in Bhabanipur, further underscoring the BJP’s sweeping success and his role as the party’s indisputable leader in the state.

The developments signal a significant political shift in West Bengal, with the BJP preparing to assume power after outperforming expectations in the assembly polls. Adhikari’s elevation reflects the party’s confidence in his ability to lead the new government effectively.
