
Ahmedabad: Two promising young men from Mehsana died after drowning in the Sabarmati River, which flows near Sapteshwar in Idar taluka of Sabarkantha district, while they had come to immerse an idol of Dashama. The incident, which occurred during a religious observance, has left the families of the deceased youths and the entire region in shock and mourning.
Tragedy struck after idol immersion, as youths went for a swim
According to available information, a group of four young men from Mehsana had come to Sapteshwar to immerse an idol as part of the Dashama vrat (fast) rituals in the Sabarmati River. After devotedly immersing the idol, all four youths went into the river to bathe. During this, unable to correctly gauge the depth and current of the water, two of the youths were pulled into the deeper waters of the river and drowned.

As soon as the incident came to light, local residents and other devotees present on the riverbank gathered at the spot. Following prompt information, fire-fighter teams from Idar, Himatnagar, and Vijapur reached the site with rescue equipment. Fire brigade personnel carried out an intensive search in the deep waters of the Sabarmati River for hours, and after considerable effort, succeeded in retrieving the bodies of both youths.
Police take custody of bodies, launch investigation
The deceased youths have been identified as 18-year-old Navdeep Rawat and 18-year-old Rajveer Thakor. Given the seriousness of the incident, a team from Jadar police station also rushed to the Sapteshwar riverbank immediately. Police took custody of the bodies of both deceased youths, prepared a panchnama, and shifted them to the nearby government hospital for postmortem as part of further proceedings. The untimely deaths of the two young sons have plunged their families into deep grief and mourning.
