A massive explosion rocked the Metropolitan Excichem company plant in Jhagadia GIDC, an industrial zone in Gujarat’s Bharuch district, on April 23, triggering a fierce fire that rapidly engulfed the entire facility.
The blast was powerful enough to be heard several kilometres away. Thick plumes of black smoke billowed into the sky, sending workers at nearby units into a panic as they scrambled to evacuate the area.
Workers Injured, Hospitalised in Ankleshwar
More than 10 workers on duty at the plant sustained serious burn injuries in the incident. All injured personnel were rushed by ambulance to Jayaben Modi Hospital in Ankleshwar, where they are currently receiving treatment. The condition of several workers is reported to be critical.

Large crowds gathered both at the hospital and at the blast site following news of the incident.
Fire Crews Battle Blaze at Chemical Unit
Fire fighting teams from Jhagadia and surrounding areas reached the site promptly after being alerted. Given the plant’s nature as a chemical unit, the fire spread rapidly, making containment significantly more challenging. Fire brigade personnel are continuing efforts to bring the blaze under control and complete rescue operations.
Cause Under Investigation
The exact cause of the explosion is yet to be determined. District administration authorities are expected to launch a formal investigation into the incident in the coming days.
