Gujarat’s Education Crisis: 2,335 Government Schools Run by a Single Teacher, 201 Shut Down in Two Years

Ahmedabad: Behind Gujarat’s education department’s promotional campaigns lies a troubling reality. While crores of rupees are spent on government initiatives like “Vanche Gujarat” and “Shala Praveshotsav,” a severe shortage of teachers is putting students’ futures at risk across the state.

2,335 Schools Running on a Single Teacher

According to government reports and data, as many as 2,335 government schools in Gujarat are being run by just one teacher each. Even as the country moves toward Digital India and global education standards, thousands of children in Gujarat are having their education entrusted to a lone instructor. The problem isn’t confined to Gujarat alone nationally, the number of single-teacher government schools has reached 1,00,483, reflecting a serious crisis in the education system at large.

201 Government Schools Shut Permanently in Two Years

Data shows that 201 government schools in Gujarat have closed permanently over just the past two years. The state had 53,626 government schools in 2023; that number has fallen to 53,425 in 2025-26. Critics and parents allege that government schools are being deliberately weakened to indirectly benefit private schools, forcing lower- and middle-income families to pay steep fees at private institutions instead.
