Ahmedabad: As incidents of online fraud continue to rise, cybercriminals have adopted a new tactic targeting people through fake traffic challan or RTO notices. In one such case, a 35-year-old supervisor from Ahmedabad’s Odhav area lost ₹11.87 lakh after installing an APK file sent from an unknown number.
How the Fraud Took Place
According to the complaint, the victim received a message from an unknown number containing an APK file purportedly linked to an RTO challan. Believing it to be genuine, he downloaded the file and entered personal details, including his name and address.
Soon after completing the process, his mobile phone reportedly began to hang. The device then started receiving multiple OTP messages in quick succession, but he did not pay much attention to them at the time.
The next morning, while checking messages on his phone, he discovered several notifications from his bank regarding multiple transactions. Alarmed, he immediately contacted his bank, where he was informed that cyber fraudsters had emptied his bank account and transferred a total of ₹11.87 lakh to other accounts.
Following the incident, the victim contacted the cyber crime helpline and subsequently lodged a complaint with the cyber crime police against the unidentified fraudsters.
