STAR CITY, Russia: The path to the stars is rarely a straight line, and for Dr. Anil Menon, it has unfolded across disaster zones, high-pressure medical clinics, and the frontier of commercial spaceflight. Born in Minneapolis to immigrant parents of Indian and Ukrainian heritage, Menon’s journey is not defined by a single breakthrough, but by a relentless pursuit of the most challenging moments.
Before he ever set foot in a spacecraft, Menon dedicated himself to the service of others. An emergency medicine physician, he was a first responder during the 2010 Haiti earthquake and the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, and he provided critical care to distressed climbers on the slopes of Mount Everest. His ability to remain calm in unpredictable, life-or-death situations caught the attention of the aerospace world, leading him to NASA and eventually SpaceX.

As the first flight surgeon hired by SpaceX, Menon was central to the success of the historic Demo-2 mission, the first time a private company launched humans into orbit. He was responsible for building the medical systems that kept astronauts safe, essentially creating the blueprint for human health in commercial spaceflight.
In 2021, NASA selected him for its prestigious astronaut candidate class. After two years of rigorous training, he is now set to embark on his maiden voyage. On July 14, 2026, he will lift off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard the Soyuz MS-29, beginning an eight-month mission to the International Space Station.
During his time in orbit, Menon will serve as both the scientist and the subject. He will perform pioneering experiments on how weightlessness affects the human circulatory system and vision, data that is absolutely critical for the future of deep-space exploration, including potential missions to Mars. As a colonel in the U.S. Space Force and a certified flight instructor, Menon brings a rare blend of technical engineering and clinical medical expertise to the ISS.
