Rakul Preet Singh Opens Up: Why Surpanakha’s Layered Story Convinced Her

Rakul Preet Singh has revealed what drew her to the complex role of Surpanakha in Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious Ramayana: Part 1 The actress’s brief but striking appearance in the recently released trailer generated significant buzz, prompting fans to wonder about her decision to portray one of the epic’s most misunderstood characters.

Responding to a heartfelt open letter from fan Dhrubajyoti Chatterjee on X, Rakul shared her thoughts. The fan praised her for taking on a figure often reduced to a single incident and asked what inspired her to accept the part. Rakul replied: “Thank you for this beautiful letter. What made me say yes to Surpanakha was exactly what you mentioned – her complexity. History often remembers her for one moment, but there is so much more to her story. As an actor, roles that challenge perception are the most exciting. I hope audiences discover her with an open mind when Ramayana arrives.”

In Valmiki’s Ramayana, Surpanakha, the sister of Ravana, plays a pivotal role. Her encounter with Rama and Lakshmana in the forest sets in motion the events leading to Sita’s abduction and the great war. Traditionally viewed through a narrow lens of rejection and vengeance, the character possesses deeper layers of emotion, loss, and agency that Rakul found compelling.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra, the film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and features a strong ensemble. Rakul’s choice reflects her preference for roles that push boundaries and invite fresh perspectives. With Ramayana slated for a Diwali 2026 release, audiences will soon see whether her nuanced take helps redefine Surpanakha beyond the conventional narrative.
