Responding to a heartfelt open letter from fan Dhrubajyoti Chatterjee on X, Rakul shared her thoughts. The fan praised her for taking on a figure often reduced to a single incident and asked what inspired her to accept the part. Rakul replied: “Thank you for this beautiful letter. What made me say yes to Surpanakha was exactly what you mentioned – her complexity. History often remembers her for one moment, but there is so much more to her story. As an actor, roles that challenge perception are the most exciting. I hope audiences discover her with an open mind when Ramayana arrives.”
In Valmiki’s Ramayana, Surpanakha, the sister of Ravana, plays a pivotal role. Her encounter with Rama and Lakshmana in the forest sets in motion the events leading to Sita’s abduction and the great war.
