“Am I Worthy?” Ranbir Kapoor Breaks Silence on Ramayana Casting Backlash

Actor Ranbir Kapoor has responded to the wave of criticism over his casting as Lord Rama in Ramayana: Part 1. The film’s first trailer dropped on Thursday, triggering a flurry of reactions online, with several users questioning whether Ranbir was the right fit for the role. Addressing the criticism, the actor said such debate is bound to happen since every devotee pictures the deity in their own way.

“Am I Worthy of Playing Ram?”

Speaking to the press while promoting the film at San Diego Comic-Con, Ranbir looked back on how he felt when he was first offered the role.

“The first question that popped into my head was, am I worthy? Am I the right person…?” he said, adding that he came to understand the role wasn’t simply about playing a character, but about representing a figure who has held a central place in Indian culture for thousands of years.

Ranbir also said there could never be one universally accepted face for Lord Rama, since every person carries their own personal image of the deity.

“All the people who have watched Ramayana have their own interpretation of Lord Ram,” he said. “Some people will feel I’m the wrong casting, others may think I’m the right one. What matters is approaching the role with the right intentions, faith and belief.”

Yash Backs Ranbir’s Performance

Co-star Yash, who plays Ravana in the film, threw his support behind Ranbir, calling the role one of the toughest an actor could take on. Yash described Ranbir’s performance as “marvellous,” praised his dedication, and said audiences would see a portrayal built on sincerity, sacrifice and purpose when the film releases.

Yash is also co-producing the film alongside Namit Malhotra. Ramayana is directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari.

Ranbir Kapoor’s Dual Role in Ramayana: Part 1

Beyond Lord Rama, Ranbir will also play Lord Parshurama in the two-part mythological epic. He admitted portraying both roles was a challenge, and said he leaned on the spiritual and emotional contrasts between the two avatars, along with shifts in body language and voice, to keep the performances distinct.

The actor said he spent nearly a year preparing for the film, studying the motivations and philosophies of both characters before shooting began.

Ramayana: Part 1 is set to release during Diwali 2026. The film also stars Sai Pallavi as Sita, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and Yash as Ravana.
