Janhvi Kapoor Is Reaching A Point Where She Can Say No To Being Sexualised Centrepiece

Mumbai : For years, Bollywood actresses have had to navigate an industry that often places appearance above performance. Songs, glamorous screen presence and carefully curated looks have frequently become as important as acting itself. But Janhvi Kapoor seems to be moving towards a stage in her career where she can finally choose roles on her own terms and say no to simply being a sexualised centrepiece in a film.

Since her debut in 2018, Kapoor has faced intense scrutiny. Conversations around her films have often been overshadowed by discussions about her appearance, fashion choices and social media presence. While that attention comes with being a star kid and the daughter of the late Sridevi, it has also meant constantly fighting to be recognised for her work as an actor.

In recent years, however, Kapoor has shown a clear interest in taking on more performance driven roles. Whether in films like Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl , Mili or Bawaal, she has attempted to move beyond the image of a glamorous leading lady and establish herself as a serious performer.

That shift is becoming even more visible with her upcoming projects. Kapoor will next be seen in Param Sundari alongside Sidharth Malhotra, a romantic drama that has already generated considerable buzz. She is also part of Peddi with Ram Charan, one of the most anticipated films currently in production.

The change reflects a larger evolution taking place in the industry. More actresses today are demanding better written characters and greater agency over how they are portrayed on screen. Instead of being reduced to decorative roles, they are increasingly looking for stories that give them substance and purpose.

Kapoor’s journey has not been without challenges. Like many young actresses, she has often found herself at the centre of online commentary, public judgement and unrealistic expectations. Yet she appears determined to focus on building a career that is defined by her choices rather than by the image others create around her.

As she enters the next phase of her career, Janhvi Kapoor seems less interested in fitting into old Bollywood stereotypes and more focused on carving out her own identity. And perhaps that is the biggest sign of her growth the ability to choose roles because she wants them, not because she has to accept them.
