Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai Way Ahead Of Bandar : Box Office

In a clear demonstration of audience preferences at the box office, Varun Dhawan’s romantic comedy Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai has maintained a commanding lead over Bobby Deol’s crime thriller Bandar five days after both films hit theatres on June 5.

On its fifth day, Tuesday, June 9, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai added approximately Rs 3.99 crore to its tally from 7,565 screenings. This performance pushed the film’s cumulative domestic gross past Rs 36.92 crore, with net collections reaching around Rs 31 crore. The movie also performed steadily overseas, earning an additional Rs 1 crore that day, bringing its international total to Rs 10.5 crore and worldwide earnings to Rs 47.42 crore.

Directed by David Dhawan, the light-hearted entertainer features Varun Dhawan alongside Mrunal Thakur, Pooja Hegde, Maniesh Paul, Chunky Panday, Jimmy Sheirgill, Mouni Roy, and Johnny Lever. It has shown resilience through its first working week, crossing the Rs 35 crore mark early in its run and continuing to attract moviegoers despite typical mid-week dips.

In contrast, Bandar, helmed by Anurag Kashyap and starring Bobby Deol with Sapna Pabbi, Sanya Malhotra, and Saba Azad, struggled significantly. The film managed only Rs 40 lakh on Day 5 from 874 shows, taking its total domestic gross to Rs 3.76 crore and net collections to about Rs 3.15 crore.

Occupancy patterns highlighted the divide. Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai registered an overall occupancy of 19.37 percent. Stronger turnout was seen in key Hindi-speaking markets such as Delhi-NCR and Mumbai at 25.5 percent, with Chennai at 25 percent and Pune at 22.8 percent. Weaker areas included Surat at 9.8 percent and Bhopal at 12.3 percent.

Bandar posted a slightly higher overall occupancy of 23.12 percent, driven by solid figures in Mumbai (42.8 percent) and Chennai (42 percent). However, it underperformed in centres like Ahmedabad (11.3 percent) and Surat (11.7 percent), underscoring challenges in sustaining audience interest.

The widening gap underscores how the breezy romantic narrative of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai has resonated more broadly with audiences compared to the intense crime drama of Bandar. As the week progresses, industry observers will watch whether the latter can find any momentum or if the former will consolidate its early advantage in the competitive summer release window.
