Mumbai: Awarapan 2 has turned its early box office performance into a surprising success story. Emraan Hashmi and Disha Patani’s film collected rs 33.75 crore nett in India on its second day, taking its two day total to rs 55.75 crore. The film had opened with rs 22 crore on Friday, August 14.
The sequel recorded a significant jump on Saturday, with Day 2 collections growing by 53.4% over its opening day figure. According to early estimates from Sacnilk data, the film earned rs 33.75 crore nett from 10,496 shows on Saturday. Its India gross collection stood at rs 66.90 crore after two days.
The overseas numbers have also added to the film’s strong start. Awarapan 2 earned an estimated rs 3.50 crore overseas on Day 2, taking its total overseas gross to rs 6 crore. Its worldwide gross after two days was estimated at rs 72.90 crore.
What makes the early success more interesting is what producer Vishesh Bhatt has said about the film’s journey before release. In an interview ahead of the theatrical release, Bhatt said that no distributor wanted to buy the film initially. He described Awarapan 2 as a passion project rather than a film made simply to cash in on the popularity of the original.
The film is a sequel to the 2007 Awarapan, which starred Emraan Hashmi and Shriya Saran. The original did not make a major impact at the box office when it was released, but over the years it developed a strong following and is now widely regarded as a cult film.
Awarapan 2, directed by Nitin Kakkar, released in theatres on August 14. It faced competition from Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta’s Batwara 1947, which released in the same period. On its second day, Batwara 1947 collected rs 13.50 crore nett in India, taking its two day total to rs 19.25 crore.
As of Sunday, August 16, Awarapan 2 has completed only two days of reported box office collections. Early Sunday trends suggest another strong day, but the final Day 3 figure is not yet confirmed. Therefore, the verified figure available so far remains rs 55.75 crore nett in India after two days.
For a sequel that reportedly struggled to find distributors before release, the first two days have delivered a very different picture audiences have turned up, and Awarapan 2 has made a strong start at the box office.
