Soni Razdan Opens Up About Her Struggles As An Actor Despite Being Alia Bhatt’s Mother

Veteran actor Soni Razdan has once again opened up about her long and challenging journey in the Hindi film industry, saying that even today her struggle is to be recognised for who she is as an actor rather than primarily as Mahesh Bhatt’s wife or Alia Bhatt’s mother.
Razdan, who has been part of acclaimed projects including 36 Chowringhee Lane, Saaransh, Mandi and Buniyaad, has spoken several times about how her professional journey was affected after her marriage to filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt in 1986.
In a recent interview with Zoom, Razdan recalled that although the work she had already committed to continued after her marriage, new opportunities suddenly stopped coming. She described the situation as though “everything went away.” According to Razdan, she was told that people in the industry questioned why she needed to work after getting married.
The actor has also previously spoken about the difficulty of establishing an identity separate from her family relationships. In a 2025 interview with News18 Showsha, she said that she has often been viewed as “somebody else’s somebody” and that her struggle remains to be known for who she is.
Her daughter Alia Bhatt has also acknowledged her mother’s professional struggles. In a 2023 interview, Alia said that Soni had consistently looked for more acting opportunities and felt she had not received her due as an actor, despite being married to a director and producer.
Razdan’s comments highlight a career that has continued across decades while her public identity has frequently been linked to two of Bollywood’s most recognisable names. Despite these challenges, she has continued to work across films, television and streaming projects.
Most recently, Razdan has been seen in the series Shaque: Trust No One, continuing her association with character-driven roles.
