Asha Bhosle’s Abusive Marriage and Financial Struggles

Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 92, endured a deeply troubled personal life marked by domestic abuse, severe emotional distress, and heartbreaking family losses, even as she built one of the most celebrated careers in Indian music. The singer was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday evening with chest infection and exhaustion. Over eight decades, she recorded more than 12,000 songs in multiple Indian languages and received numerous accolades, including two National Film Awards and a record seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer.

Details of her difficult early years came to light in the 2025 biography Asha Bhosle: A Life In Music by Ramya Sarma. Bhosle married Ganpatrao Bhosle at the age of 16 in 1949 in what she described as a love marriage. Her sister Lata Mangeshkar disapproved and stopped speaking to her for some time. The family was conservative and struggled to accept a singing star as a daughter-in-law. Bhosle portrayed her husband, who was 20 years older and worked as her personal secretary, as short-tempered and possibly sadistic. She said she fulfilled her duties according to Hindu dharma without questioning his actions, keeping the problems private.

In one particularly harrowing incident, while four months pregnant and already unwell, Bhosle found herself in a hospital with appalling conditions that intensified her mental agony. She swallowed an entire bottle of sleeping tablets in a moment of despair but was saved by her strong love for the unborn child and medical intervention.

From her first marriage, Asha Bhosle had three children: sons Hemant and Anand, and daughter Varsha. The couple separated when she was expecting Anand in 1960. She later married renowned music composer R.D. Burman in 1980; the couple chose not to have children and separated in the early 1990s. Burman passed away in 1994.

Tragedy continued to strike the family. Eldest son Hemant Bhosle, who composed music for a few films, died in 2015 after battling cancer for a long time. Three years earlier, in 2012, daughter Varsha Bhosle, who had been suffering from depression and had attempted suicide in 2008, shot herself. Youngest son Anand Bhosle looked after his mother’s professional affairs, while her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle provided close companionship in her later years.

The biography highlighted how these personal challenges unfolded against the backdrop of Bhosle’s demanding career, where financial responsibilities and the pressures of sustaining a high-profile life in the entertainment industry added another layer of strain. Despite the immense success and wealth generated from her vast body of work, the legendary singer’s family history revealed a life shadowed by pain, loss, and resilience.
