After Rice, China Rejects Indian Red Chillies

Indian spices are exported around the world and are known for their unmatched quality and taste. But a recent trend has left many wondering if the quality has taken a beating.

China, which is the biggest buyer of red chillies from India, has rejected nearly 3 cargoes of dried chilled and has also suspended 3 exporters. Excessive levels of methamidopos were found in the chillies.

What is Methamidophos?

Methamidophos is a potent insecticide, used primarily to keep insects that bite and chew away. It is known by names like Monitor and Tamaron. Its residential and agricultural use is strictly restricted or banned in many countries due to its high toxicity, and is classified as an EPA Class I compound (labeled “Danger-Poison”).

High levels of it affects the nervous system and can be threatening.

With chilli prices already rising, the imports had reduces and now with issues such as these, the imports will take another hit. China has imported a record number of chillies during 2024-25, and the imports are likely to reduce due to increasing prices.
