Heatwave Trigger Rise in Eye Problems, Warn Doctors | Details
Eye specialists report surge in dry eyes, irritation, and blurred vision due to extreme heat, dust, and screen exposure; caution against self-medication.

Ahmedabad: As temperatures soar past 42°C in parts of the country, medical experts are reporting a noticeable increase in eye-related health issues. According to Media Source, the combination of intense heat, dust-laden air, and excessive screen time is causing widespread discomfort among individuals, particularly dry eyes, redness, irritation, and blurry vision.
Doctors attribute the worsening condition to the overuse of air conditioners and coolers, which contribute to eye dryness. In addition, constant exposure to mobile and computer screens further strains the eyes, intensifying the symptoms.
Dr. Kamini Prajapati, Associate Professor at the M&J Institute of Ophthalmology, Civil Hospital, said, “The rising dust and heat are major contributors to eye allergies. We’re seeing a spike in cases of red, watery eyes and irritation caused by seasonal allergies and elevated body temperatures.”
Eye Care Tips During Heatwaves:
Medical professionals are advising people to take protective measures while outdoors. These include wearing UV-protective glasses and hats to block sunlight and shield eyes from dust. Indoors, regular breaks from screens ideally the 20-20-20 rule (looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds after every 20 minutes of screen time) can help reduce digital eye strain.
Applying a cold compress is recommended to soothe irritated eyes. Dr. Prajapati emphasized the importance of consulting an ophthalmologist rather than opting for over-the-counter solutions. “Self-medicating with eye drops especially those containing steroids can lead to serious complications such as cataracts and even vision loss,” she warned.
As heatwaves intensify, experts urge the public to remain cautious and proactive in protecting their eye health.
