Switzerland Aim to Shock Lionel Messi’s Argentina and Reach Their First-Ever FIFA World Cup Semi-final

Kansas City (USA): The final quarter-final of the FIFA World Cup, scheduled for tomorrow at 6:30 AM IST, features two teams with vastly different histories in the tournament. Defending champions Argentina, led by global superstar Lionel Messi and several other world-class players, will take on Switzerland, a team that has quietly emerged as one of the tournament’s surprise packages.
Switzerland are bidding to reach the FIFA World Cup semi-finals for the first time in their history. In fact, they had not even qualified for the quarter-finals since the 1954 edition before making this remarkable run in the current tournament.
Argentina boast one of the strongest squads in world football, featuring Lionel Messi alongside attacking stars Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez. However, the 2022 world champions have not had an easy journey. They struggled to edge past 64th-ranked Cape Verde in the Round of 32 and were forced to stage a comeback after trailing Egypt 0-2 before eventually securing victory.
Switzerland Sense an Opportunity Against the Defending Champions
Argentina’s recent struggles have given Switzerland genuine belief that they can produce a major upset. The Swiss booked their place in the quarter-finals after defeating Colombia in a penalty shootout. The winners of this contest will face either Norway or England in the semi-finals.

While Switzerland have managed only three goals in five matches during this World Cup, Lionel Messi alone has already scored eight. Containing the Argentine captain will be the biggest challenge for the Swiss defence, with Granit Xhaka, Manuel Akanji, Remo Freuler, Denis Zakaria, Nico Elvedi, Ricardo Rodriguez, and goalkeeper Gregor Kobel expected to shoulder the responsibility of stopping the tournament’s most dangerous player.
