The first match of the 16th season of the Big Bash League will take place on December 12 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai between the Melbourne Renegades and the reigning champion Perth Scorchers.
After the fourth day of play in the opening Test between Australia and New Zealand in Perth, the historic match, the BBL’s first-ever match outside of Australia, will start at 2:40 PM IST.
The governments of both nations have endorsed the match, which was jointly announced by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a visit to the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday, as part of larger initiatives to improve Australia-India relationship
Alistair Dobson, General Manager of Big Bash Leagues at Cricket Australia, stated that bringing the competition to India was a reflection of the league’s expanding global fan base. “Our sport has such an authentic connection in India,” Dobson stated. “This game is also part of a much bigger initiative across both our governments and shows that cricket is a connector for both our countries, and that both the Australian and Indian governments see that and want to be part of it.”We are ecstatic about the chance and anticipate that the game will be the most viewed sporting event in Australian domestic league history.
Officials from Cricket Australia believe that bringing the BBL to India, even for a single match, will spur exponential fan following.
In the largest cricket market in the world, Cricket Australia executives believe that bringing the BBL to India, even for a single game, will result in exponential growth in fan involvement, viewership, and exposure of the league and its teams. It’s interesting to note that this action coincides with the league’s consideration of allowing private investment in the BBL franchises. It’s interesting to note that if CA, the six states, and the players’ union, the Australian Cricketers’ Association, approve an investment model, the Renegades and Scorchers would probably be among the first teams to test the market.
The BCCI and Australian authorities, especially Australian Consul-General Silai Zaki, supported the selection of Chennai’s “Chepauk” stadium. In May of this year, a combined mission from the BBL and the CA visited Chennai to survey the stadium and the city. On the fringes of the Chennai Super Kings-Sunrisers Hyderabad IPL match, the group also had meetings with interim CEO Hemang Amin and BCCI President Mithun Manhas.
The last time Australia played there was in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where they lost to India to start their campaign before rallying to win the championship later on. The second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is also slated to take place at the venue next year.
