Colombo: Mumbai-born young cricketers are currently helping Team India pick up wickets in Colombo in a rather unusual manner. Last week, during the first Test in Galle, Yashasvi Jaiswal had pointed towards a stand and challenged Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella to hit a six there, after which Dickwella lost his wicket. Now, in the second Test in Colombo, Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva and Dickwella both became victims of substitute fielder Sarfaraz Khan’s teasing and went on to lose their wickets. A video and photographs of Sarfaraz constantly talking, particularly distracting Dhananjaya before his dismissal, have gone viral.
Rishabh Pant had returned to batting after suffering a hand injury and spent 138 minutes at the crease, scoring 63 runs. However, as Pant did not come out to field, Sarfaraz took his place in the field throughout the entire third day on Tuesday.
Stationed at short leg close to the batter, Sarfaraz kept up a constant stream of comments. First, Dhananjaya, after reaching eight runs, was dismissed on the 14th ball he faced, and then Dickwella was dismissed for a duck off just the third ball of his innings. Dhananjaya was caught by KL Rahul at slip off spinner Manav Suthar. After losing his concentration, he edged the ball and Rahul completed the catch. Ten overs later, Dickwella also fell to a Mohammed Siraj delivery after being subjected to Sarfaraz’s continuous chatter, giving a catch to stand-in wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel.
What Sarfaraz Told Dhananjaya Before His Dismissal
According to the stump microphone, Sarfaraz tried to distract Dhananjaya by saying, “There is nothing behind that big screen. There is no movement. Brother, you keep looking there for no reason and waste your own time. Look straight ahead without looking around and focus on playing. Don’t be scared, you are the captain. Come on, bro.”
Dhananjaya lost his wicket shortly after Sarfaraz made those comments. He tried to defend a delivery from Manav Suthar that pitched on middle stump, but the ball took the edge of his bat and went behind the stumps. It then deflected off wicketkeeper Jurel’s gloves before travelling towards Rahul, who completed the catch.
Sarfaraz Then Targeted Dickwella
After getting Dhananjaya, Sarfaraz turned his attention towards Dickwella. The two exchanged smiles, but Dickwella too fell into Sarfaraz’s trap and soon gave a catch to Jurel.
