In a deeply distressing incident in Jalandhar, Punjab, a woman doctor was found dead in her residence, prompting serious accusations from her family against her estranged husband. Authorities discovered Dr. Meenakshi hanging in her room on Wednesday, with all doors locked from the inside. Police had to break open glass windows to gain entry.
Dr. Meenakshi had been living separately from her husband, Dr. Piyush, since July 2025. Piyush, also a medical professional and proprietor of a local eye hospital, faced claims of repeated physical and mental harassment. According to her relatives, the couple married in October 2018. Soon after, Meenakshi purchased a Thar vehicle and managed the loan installments using her own earnings.
Family members described a troubled relationship exacerbated by Piyush’s alleged extramarital involvement with a nurse at his hospital. They stated that the couple’s daughter uncovered evidence of the affair through security camera recordings after growing suspicious. Meenakshi’s mother reported instances of physical violence, claiming that Piyush would contact her after such episodes to admit his actions and express regret. Fed up with the ongoing assaults, Meenakshi chose to live alone.
She had reportedly been considering divorce proceedings, though her father suggested delaying any legal steps for some time. In recent weeks, she was preparing to purchase her own property. During a bank visit related to this plan, her family alleged she learned of a substantial unauthorized loan of Rs 2.5 crore taken in her name partly for a vehicle and the remainder for her husband’s hospital without her consent or signature on the documents.

A police case has been registered following the family’s complaints. As investigations continue, Piyush’s phone remains switched off, and he has not yet been interviewed. Relatives expressed uncertainty about the exact circumstances of the death, noting that only a post-mortem examination would clarify whether it was a case of suicide or something else.
This case highlights the profound personal and financial strains that can arise in strained marriages, drawing attention to the challenges faced by individuals navigating such difficult situations. Officials are expected to provide further updates as the inquiry progresses.
