US Networks Halt White House Pool Coverage in Protest Over Ban on Three Outlets

Major US television networks suspended pool coverage of the White House on Monday in response to President Donald Trump’s decision to bar three news organisations from the premises. The action was taken in solidarity with CNN, which had been scheduled to provide the shared television feed that day.

CNN, MS NOW and Politico were ordered banned on Friday. The five leading broadcasters ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC issued a joint statement emphasising the public interest in accurate and independent information about government activities and stating that no administration should restrict a news organisation because of objections to its reporting.

As a result, there was no television coverage of the president’s planned engagements at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where meetings with foreign leaders were scheduled.

The three barred outlets filed a lawsuit seeking immediate reversal of the ban, arguing that it constitutes a direct violation of the First Amendment right to free speech. They said the credentials of their journalists were revoked without notice or process after the White House objected to their coverage.

President Trump defended the decision, describing the media as a threat and distinguishing between a free press and what he called “fake news.” Vice President JD Vance stated that the outlets could continue reporting and retained free speech rights but would no longer receive White House office access.

Journalists from the three organisations were denied entry to White House grounds on Saturday and had their passes confiscated. The president has not provided specific details about the stories that prompted the action, describing the decision as cumulative over recent years and warning that other outlets could face similar measures.

The episode marks a significant escalation in long-running tensions between the administration and segments of the news media.
