CBI Arrests Giribala Singh in Twisha Sharma Death Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested Giribala Singh, the mother-in-law of Twisha Sharma and a former judge, from her residence in Bhopal, escalating the high-profile investigation into the young woman’s death.

Singh was taken into custody by a CBI team that arrived at her home in the Bag Mughaliya Extension area of the Madhya Pradesh capital. The arrest follows Wednesday’s decision by the Madhya Pradesh High Court to quash the anticipatory bail previously granted to her in the dowry harassment case linked to Twisha’s death.Twisha Sharma, 33, was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12, barely five months after her marriage to lawyer Samarth Singh, son of Giribala Singh. While initial reports indicated she died by hanging, the case gained national attention after her family raised serious concerns about the circumstances and alleged mental harassment.

According to sources, CBI officials questioned Giribala Singh following the High Court order before placing her under arrest. This development came just a day after the court cancelled her anticipatory bail.

Samarth Singh, Twisha’s husband, was arrested by Bhopal Police on May 23 from the premises of a Jabalpur district court after he had been absconding for nearly 10 days. He had earlier withdrawn his anticipatory bail application from the High Court and expressed his intention to surrender. A local court subsequently remanded him to seven days of police custody for interrogation.

Investigators are examining digital evidence, including WhatsApp chats and call records, as part of the probe. Twisha’s parents have alleged that she faced mental pressure and dowry-related harassment from her husband and in-laws after marriage. Court proceedings reportedly referenced messages in which Twisha told her family she felt “suffocated” and wished to leave the house. The family has also claimed there were attempts to tamper with evidence following her death and questioned the initial delay in registering the FIR.

Giribala Singh had sought anticipatory bail from a Bhopal sessions court just two days after Twisha’s death. The CBI’s involvement has intensified scrutiny in the case, which continues to draw significant public interest across the country.
