Pune : Pawars’ Unity Gambit Flops As BJP Surges in Pimpri Chinchwad Civic Polls

Pune : BJP set for victory in the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, as early trends after counting began on Friday. In Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, the BJP opened a clear lead over the rival NCP factions led by Ajit Pawar and his uncle Sharad Pawar. The BJP also led in civic bodies across western Maharashtra, including Kolhapur, Satara, Solapur and Sangli. The BJP’s performance in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad indicated a continuation of its earlier dominance.

The BJP contested independently against its Mahayuti partners—the NCP and the Shiv Sena led by Deputy Chief Ministers Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde, respectively. The Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Indian National Congress also joined the fray. The BJP led in 43 of the 165 civic wards in Pune, followed by the Congress in seven seats, the NCP in five, and the NCP (SP) in three. In the 128-member Pimpri Chinchwad civic body, the BJP led in 70 wards, while the NCP stayed ahead in 40.

The BJP led in 60 of the 102 wards in the Solapur municipal corporation. In the 81-member Kolhapur civic body, Mahayuti partners—the BJP, Shiv Sena and the NCP—together led in 25 seats, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi stayed ahead in 21 wards. Elections to 29 municipal corporations took place on January 15 after a gap of several years, as the terms of most civic bodies had ended between 2020 and 2023.

The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance is all set to emerge victorious in the Kalyan–Dombivli (KMDC) Municipal Corporation. As trends suggest, the NDA alliance is leading with 61 seats, with the BJP emerging as the single largest party with 32 seats. Shiv Sena follows next with 29 seats. The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) put up a disappointing show, as the party is leading in only five seats. Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) is leading in four. NCP (SP) and Congress are leading with just one seat respectively.
