According to US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, India intends to purchase the battle-tested Javelin single-man portable, “fire-and-forget” medium-range anti-tank weapon system. In an effort to improve defense cooperation between Washington and New Delhi, the US State Department authorized the sale of the FGM-148 Javelin weapon system to India in November of last year.
The embassy continued, “The agreement creates new opportunities for the defense industries of both countries to work together.
The missile system is already in service with the U.S. Army and Marine Corps as well as several international customers.” Gor continued, “We see enormous potential for future cooperation that strengthens the defense industrial bases of both countries.”
The quantity and total cost of the Javelin anti-tank guided missile systems that India is acquiring are currently unknown. Additionally, New Delhi refrained from commenting on the deal right away.
The US and its allies frequently use the Javelin, a portable anti-tank missile weapon that Lockheed Martin and RTX jointly developed for use against armored targets.
The autonomous guidance mechanism of the shoulder-fired weapon enables the missile to track its target after launch, allowing the operator to take cover and evade counterfire.
The tank’s canopy, which is its least armored section, gets struck by the javelin as people enter the cockpit. To accurately hit its target, it travels in an inverted U-shaped trajectory from launch to impact.
The missile receives a lock-on-before-launch signal from the command launch unit after the gunner uses a cursor to select the target. Because of its modest weight, soldiers can reload to take on another threat or relocate after fire.
The system may be securely fired from enclosed structures, such as buildings and bunkers, thanks to its soft-launch architecture.
The Javelin Joint Venture, which included Lockheed Martin in Orlando, Florida, and Raytheon in Tucson, Arizona, created and manufactured the Javelin for the US Army and Marine Corps.
