Young Australian Cricketer’s Tragic Death in Training Echoes Phil Hughes Nightmare

In a heartbreaking incident that has stunned the cricket world, 17-year-old Ben Austin, a promising player from Melbourne, has died following a severe head injury sustained during a routine training session. The tragedy, occurring almost 11 years after the untimely death of Australian opener Phil Hughes, underscores the inherent risks in the sport, even under controlled practice conditions.

Austin was honing his skills at the Wally Tew Reserve in Ferntree Gully, preparing for an upcoming T20 match against Eildon Park. Reports indicate he was batting against an automatic bowling machine while wearing a helmet when he was struck in the head and neck area. Emergency paramedics responded immediately, rushing the teenager to Monash Medical Centre, where medical staff fought to stabilize him. Despite their exhaustive efforts, Austin succumbed to his injuries on October 29, 2025.

Cricket Victoria, the governing body for the sport in the state, expressed profound grief in a statement posted on social media. “Cricket Victoria is deeply saddened & shocked at the passing of 17-year-old Ben Austin from Ferntree Gully Cricket Club. Our sincere love & thoughts are with the Austin family, Ben’s teammates, Ferntree Gully Cricket Club and the Victorian cricket community.
