Sudden Loss Shakes Tamil Cinema: Comedian Robo Shankar Dies at 46 After Brief Illness

Tamil entertainment circles reeled from grief Thursday as beloved comedian and actor Robo Shankar succumbed to health complications in Chennai at age 46. The news, breaking late evening, prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and peers alike.

Shankar collapsed on a film set Tuesday, September 16, leading to his admission at GEM Hospital in critical condition. Diagnosed with severe gastrointestinal bleeding and multi-organ failure linked to an intricate abdominal issue, he received round-the-clock care in the intensive care unit. Despite aggressive interventions by the hospital’s expert team, his health declined sharply. Shifted to ICU on Wednesday amid worsening symptoms, Shankar passed away around 8:30 p.m. the following evening, as confirmed by Dr. S. Asokan, CEO of GEM Hospital, Perungudi.

Hailing from Madurai, Shankar earned his “Robo” nickname through signature robotic dance flair. His career blossomed in the 2000s via bit parts before a breakout on Star Vijay’s hit comedy series Kalakka Povathu Yaaru, where sharp wit and exaggerated gestures won over audiences. That momentum landed him roles in acclaimed films like Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara and the breakout Vaayai Moodi Pesavum, the latter cementing his stardom.

Shankar’s filmography swelled with memorable outings in Velainu Vandhutta Vellaikaaran, Kadavul Irukaan Kumaru, Singam 3, Viswasam, and Cobra, though his electrifying portrayal in Dhanush’s Maari lingers as a highlight. A 2023 jaundice battle forced a temporary retreat, alarming supporters with visible weight loss. That year, he faced scrutiny for keeping two Alexandrine parakeets, protected under Schedule IV of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Undaunted, Shankar staged a robust comeback, gracing TV gigs and movies including Are You Ok Baby?, Singapore Saloon, Jolly O Gymkhana, and his final bow in this year’s lighthearted Sotta Sotta Nanaiyuthu. He leaves behind wife, actress Priyanka Shankar, and daughter, influencer Indraja Shankar.

The abrupt departure stunned the industry. Veteran Kamal Haasan led condolences via a poignant X post, capturing the widespread sorrow for a performer whose humor bridged screens and hearts.
