Trump Ally Charlie Kirk Assassinated at Utah University Event

OREM, Utah — Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and key supporter of President Donald Trump, was fatally shot Wednesday during an event at Utah Valley University, in what authorities have labeled a targeted political assassination. The 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA was struck in the neck while engaging in a Q&A session, prompting widespread condemnation across the political spectrum.
President Trump announced Kirk’s death on Truth Social, describing him as a “great, and even legendary” figure who resonated deeply with America’s youth. “He was loved and admired by all, especially me,” Trump wrote, extending condolences to Kirk’s wife, Erika, and their family. In a video address, Trump vowed to pursue those responsible for the attack and others involved in political violence, emphasizing accountability for attacks on public figures.
The shooting occurred during Turning Point USA’s “American Comeback Tour” at the university’s Sorensen Center courtyard. Videos circulating online captured the moment a single shot rang out, showing Kirk collapsing as blood poured from his neck, with attendees fleeing in panic. Utah Governor Spencer Cox called the incident a “political assassination,” urging an end to political violence. “This is a dark day for our state and our nation,” Cox said at a press conference.
FBI Director Kash Patel initially reported a suspect in custody but later clarified the individual was released after questioning, leaving the shooter still at large. Orem Mayor David Young confirmed the suspect remains unidentified, with authorities analyzing security footage showing a figure in dark clothing, possibly firing from a rooftop. The university, Utah’s largest public institution, closed its campus and canceled classes indefinitely.
Kirk’s death has reignited concerns about escalating political violence in the U.S., following incidents like the 2024 assassination attempts on Trump and attacks on Democratic officials. Both Republican and Democratic leaders, including House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and former Vice President Kamala Harris, condemned the shooting, calling for unity against such acts.
