New Delhi : Days after DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin faced criticism over his double-meaning remarks about actor Trisha, the party’s mouthpiece, Murasoli, has taken an indirect dig at actor-turned-politician Vijay over his conduct at an official Independence Day event. In a sharply worded editorial, the newspaper criticised Vijay for allowing an actor to sit in the front row and exchanging salutes with her during the celebrations at Fort St George on Saturday.
Without any shame or hesitation, he made an actress sit in the front row and exchanged repeated salutes back and forth – a sight that even those who voted for him could not digest,” it said. Trisha was seated alongside Vijay’s parents in the front row at the Tamil Nadu government’s Independence Day celebrations. Dressed in a yellow saree, she was seen saluting Vijay as he hoisted the national flag and reviewed the ceremonial proceedings. Her presence at major official programmes has set tongues wagging; prior to this, she attended Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony in May, where she was seen getting visibly emotional.
Vijay’s wife, Sangeetha, filed for divorce in February 2026, weeks before the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. In her petition, she cited mental cruelty, emotional neglect, desertion and alleged adultery as grounds for ending the marriage. Incidentally, she withdrew the divorce plea earlier this month. Against this backdrop, Trisha and Vijay’s viral moments at the I-Day event handed fresh ammunition to the DMK. “The man who has now become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is someone who seeks to justify such shameful and repulsive behaviour by displaying it brazenly,” it said.
As the DMK resorts to sniping at Trisha to dent Vijay’s public image, it has proved former BJP leader K Annamalai right. At the India Today Tamil Nadu Roundtable in Chennai on Monday, Annamalai said some parties still want to stay in the old ways of “abusing,” “pulling in a lady,” “pulling in a mother” to settle political scores.
