Mumbai: A major portion of the Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Road in Bhandup (West) caved in on Saturday afternoon amid heavy rainfall in Mumbai, creating a massive crater and disrupting traffic on one of the city’s busiest arterial roads.
The road collapse affected an area measuring approximately 100 feet by 100 feet on LBS Road near the Asian Paintspremises, where excavation work was underway. The incident occurred at around 1 pm.
LBS Road, which connects Sion and Thane, regularly witnesses heavy traffic. The ongoing Metro rail construction has already narrowed sections of the road, adding to congestion in the area.
According to an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s ‘S’ Ward, no injuries were reported in the incident. However, a parked tempo fell into the collapsed section of the road after the cave-in.
Officials from the ‘S’ Ward rushed to the spot immediately after the incident and barricaded the affected area to prevent further accidents.

Following the road collapse, traffic on LBS Road was diverted to alternate routes to ease congestion.
The exact cause of the cave-in has not yet been determined. However, officials believe the collapse may have been triggered by heavy rainfall and the resulting soil erosion.
