Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been handed his debut cap, becoming the youngest ever cricketer to debut for India, be it men or women. Sooryavanshi, who is 15 years and 99 days old, broke master blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s record, who debuted at the age of 16 years and 205 days against Pakistan in Karachi, back in 1989. Sooryavanshi replaces Sanju Samson up top, who has been dropped after a string of low scores.
India’s previous youngest cricketer was Shefali Varma, who debuted at the age of 15 years and 239 days against South Africa in 2019.
Fans across India have been vocal for Sooryavanshi’s inclusion, especially after India’s shambolic series loss against Ireland, despite fielding a near full strength squad, filled with IPL superstars. The previous match ended up being washed out after India batted first. India have won the toss in the 2nd T20I in Manchester, and have chose to bat first.
