“You Should West Be Ashamed”: Mamata’s Viral Rage at Hospital CEO After Abhishek’s Brutal Attack

West Bengal: West Bengal politics has exploded into fresh controversy after a viral audio clip captured Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee erupting in anger at the CEO of Belle Vue Hospital. The heated confrontation came just hours after her nephew and party star, Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee, was attacked and manhandled by a mob in Sonarpur. In the clip, Mamata can be heard sharply reprimanding CEO Pradip Tandon, telling him, “You should be ashamed. God will not excuse you. Are you running the hospital, or is the BJP in charge?” The audio has since been shared tens of thousands of times across social media, igniting a fierce political battle between the TMC and BJP.

The controversy began on Saturday, May 25, when Abhishek Banerjee visited families affected by post poll violence in South 24 Parganas. What should have been a routine outreach turned violent when locals began hurling eggs, stones, and even shoes at his convoy. The 34 year old MP was knocked down, his shirt was torn, his glasses broke, and women in the crowd shouted “chor, chor” at him. Shaken but defiant, Abhishek claimed it was a “pre planned attempt on my life” and accused BJP workers of orchestrating the attack. He said he would move the Supreme Court for justice. The BJP rejected these charges, calling it an eruption of “public anger” against the TMC, with BJP Rajya Sabha MP Rahul Sinha suggesting that TMC leaders now face growing hostility from the public.

After Abhishek was admitted to Belle Vue Hospital in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee arrived at the hospital and confronted CEO Pradip Tandon. The 74 year old TMC chief, visibly furious, accused the hospital administration of receiving threat calls from police and being pressured not to admit her nephew. She told Tandon, “Sorry Mr. Tandon, you have done a wrong thing. Remember what help we have done for you. Tomorrow, if the central government is not there, we will take care of it.” In the clip, she said doctors were “sad but scared” and that police were demanding permission before treating any patient. She alleged that “those in power” were threatening hospitals to deny treatment to her nephew.

This is not Mamata’s first fight with private hospital administrators. In 2017, she publicly scolded private hospitals for “fleece patients” with inflated bills and announced the creation of the West Bengal Health Regulatory Commission to control billing and ensure transparency. At the time, she had also targeted Belle Vue Hospital specifically for its service standards and opaque billing practices. Her 2017 warning to hospitals “Don’t fleece patients” became a hallmark of her stance on healthcare accessibility, and this latest confrontation shows she has not softened her approach.

The incident lays bare the toxic post election atmosphere in West Bengal. From the RG Kar hospital rape case protests last year to this violent attack on Abhishek and now Mamata’s public confrontation with a hospital CEO, tensions are running dangerously high. Both major parties are accusing each other of violence, intimidation, and undermining democracy. The TMC has called the BJP “killers,” while the BJP has condemned the attack on Abhishek and urged peace. As of this morning, the audio clip has become a political weapon, with both sides trading accusations over the attack, the hospital confrontation, and the broader question of political violence in the state. For now, the row shows no sign of cooling down, and West Bengal watches with bated breath as the political storm continues to intensify.
