Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee faced protests and an alleged physical attack during his visit to Sonarpur in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district on Saturday. According to reports by The Times of India, Banerjee had travelled to the area to meet families affected by recent post-poll violence.
Videos circulating on social media showed a tense atmosphere as protesters confronted the TMC leader. Stones and eggs were allegedly thrown at him while several people surrounded him during the visit.
Banerjee Claims Attack Was Planned
Speaking after the incident, Abhishek Banerjee alleged that the attackers intended to harm him and claimed the incident was orchestrated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He accused BJP supporters of creating unrest during his visit and questioned the absence of adequate police presence at the location.

The TMC leader stated that the entire episode had been recorded and indicated that legal action could follow.
Visit Linked to Post-Poll Violence Cases
Banerjee’s visit was aimed at meeting the families of party workers and residents reportedly affected by violence following the recent political developments in the state. The visit marked one of his major public appearances amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal.
Earlier, The Times of India had reported that Banerjee planned to meet families of deceased TMC workers in Sonarpur and other areas as part of the party’s outreach efforts.
Political Tensions Continue in West Bengal
The incident has further intensified the political confrontation between the TMC and BJP in West Bengal. While Banerjee blamed BJP supporters for the attack, opposition leaders have continued to criticize the TMC over allegations related to post-poll unrest in the state.
The development comes amid ongoing political friction, investigations, and public protests following the recent assembly election results.
