New Delhi: Several Muslim families in southwest Delhi’s Uttam Nagar are considering temporarily leaving their homes ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, citing fear and uncertainty following recent communal tensions, Hindustan Times reported.
According to residents of Hastsal village, anxiety has intensified after the killing of a 26-year-old man during a clash between two families from different communities on Holi. Locals alleged that in the days following the incident, certain religious groups issued threats, including provocative statements, which have contributed to a sense of insecurity in the neighbourhood.
Families told Hindustan Times that they are contemplating relocating until the situation stabilises. Many said the upcoming festival has heightened their concerns, with fears that tensions could escalate further. Some residents claimed they had heard threatening remarks suggesting violence, adding to their unease.
One long-time resident, who has lived in the area for decades and runs a local eatery, said his family feels unsafe despite deep roots in the locality. He described an atmosphere of fear, noting that uncertainty about safety has left families with limited options.
However, Delhi Police have maintained that they are actively engaging with the community and monitoring the situation. Officials told Hindustan Times that meetings are being held with residents to maintain peace and confidence. Police also stated that, based on their interactions, no one has formally indicated plans to leave the area.
Security measures have been heightened in the locality since the Holi incident, which had already triggered protests and drawn attention from various groups. Authorities have emphasised their commitment to maintaining law and order and preventing any escalation.
As reported by Hindustan Times, the situation remains tense but under close watch, with both residents and officials navigating a fragile atmosphere ahead of Eid celebrations.
