Barabanki: More than 30 people, including children and elderly guests, were hospitalised following a suspected case of food poisoning at a wedding ceremony in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district, according to a report by The New Indian Express, citing PTI.
The incident took place on Saturday evening in the Lalapur locality of the Dewa area during a wedding function hosted by Mohammad Nazim, a resident of Khijna village. As reported by The New Indian Express, several attendees began experiencing severe abdominal pain and vomiting within about half an hour of consuming non-vegetarian dishes served at the event.
Health officials said the sudden onset of symptoms caused alarm among guests, prompting locals to alert authorities. An ambulance was immediately dispatched to the village, and all affected individuals were taken to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Dewa for treatment.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Awadhesh Yadav reached the site to oversee medical care and assess the situation. While most patients are currently receiving treatment at the CHC, six individuals with more serious symptoms have been referred to the district hospital for advanced care.
Officials stated that several patients have already been discharged after their condition stabilised. Medical teams continue to monitor the remaining patients as part of ongoing treatment efforts.
Authorities have initiated a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the suspected food poisoning. Food samples from the wedding have been collected and sent for laboratory analysis.
The incident has raised concerns about food safety at large gatherings, with officials emphasising the importance of proper hygiene and handling practices during events involving mass catering. Meanwhile, the health department continues its inquiry to identify the source of contamination and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
