Nirmala Sitharaman Cites Elon Musk’s Post, Slams Opposition On GDP

New Delhi : Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, speaking at the Youth Dialogue on Budget 2026-27, highlighted India’s rising contribution to global growth. Speaking at the event, the Finance Minister said that Musk had referred to International Monetary Fund (IMF) data to note the scale of India’s contribution, stating that China accounts for 26% of global GDP growth while India contributes 17%, together making up 43% of global growth.

Elon Musk takes the IMF data to say, ‘wow, is this true?’ You know, that kind. I don’t remember what exactly he said. Wow, he said, or something else he said,” the Finance Minister said at the event. She then referred to the figures shown in the widely shared graphic. “China contributes 26 per cent of the growth in global GDP. India contributes 17 per cent. Together, 43 per cent of global GDP growth comes from these two economies. Did any of you see that tweet?

Earlier on Saturday, Elon Musk cited the latest IMF data on countries driving global growth, noting that India ranks among the top contributors, ahead of the United States, and said the “balance of power is changing.” Musk shared a chart based on the IMF’s January 2026 projections, showing the top 10 contributors to global real GDP growth in 2026. Accompanying the chart, Musk wrote: “The balance of power is changing.”

Musk’s comments come amid global economic instability and rising trade tensions, including tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on countries such as China and India. The chart highlights an apparent eastward shift in global economic power. Sitharaman made the remarks while interacting with university students in Parliament after presenting the Union Budget 2026-27. The session in New Delhi included around 30 students who had observed the budget proceedings from the Lok Sabha gallery.
