NEET-UG 2026 Cancelled After Paper Leak in Rajasthan; CBI Probe Ordered, Re-Exam Dates to Be Announced

India’s biggest medical entrance examination has been cancelled. NEET-UG 2026, held on May 3, has been scrapped following allegations of a ‘guess paper’ leak, after inputs from central law enforcement agencies raised serious concerns about the integrity of the exam. The Central Bureau of Investigation has been ordered to probe the leak, and the National Testing Agency has confirmed the exam will be held again.

Why the Exam Was Cancelled

The National Testing Agency said the decision was taken after reviewing inputs shared by law enforcement agencies, which indicated the examination process may have been compromised. In its official statement, NTA said the exam “could not be allowed to stand” given the evidence, and that cancellation was necessary to maintain transparency and credibility in the national testing system.

CBI to Investigate the Leak

The Government of India has handed the case to the CBI for a comprehensive inquiry. The agency will investigate how the alleged ‘guess paper’ circulated before the exam and whether organised malpractice was involved. NTA said it would fully cooperate with the probe, providing all records, data, and materials required for the investigation.

Re-Exam Confirmed; Fresh Dates Awaited

NTA has confirmed NEET-UG 2026 will be conducted again. Fresh dates will be announced through official channels. The agency acknowledged the re-exam would cause inconvenience to students and families but stressed that allowing a compromised result to stand would have caused greater long-term damage to the credibility of the system.

What Students Need to Know

Students will not be required to register again. Existing candidature details and registration data will be carried forward, and previously selected examination centres will remain valid. No additional fee will be charged, and fees already paid will be refunded in full. Fresh admit cards will be issued ahead of the re-examination.

NTA has urged candidates to rely only on official updates and avoid misinformation circulating on social media.

The Broader Question

This is not the first time NEET has been at the centre of an integrity controversy, and the cancellation has once again focused attention on examination security in India. With lakhs of aspirants sitting the exam each year, any breach of the process strikes at the heart of fairness for an entire generation of medical hopefuls. By ordering a CBI probe and cancelling the exam outright, authorities are signalling that malpractice will not be accommodated but the task of rebuilding student trust now rests squarely on the outcome of the investigation and the conduct of the re-exam.
