Is Google’s Earthquake Alert System Available in India? Here’s How Android Users Can Get Early Warnings

The powerful twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday (June 24), killing 589 people and causing widespread destruction, have drawn global attention to Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts System after many users received warning notifications moments before the tremors hit.

The alerts, sent seconds before the strongest shaking reached affected areas, gave some people valuable time to take cover, highlighting how early warning technology can help save lives during seismic emergencies. The incident has also prompted many people in India to ask whether Google’s earthquake alert system is available in the country.

Is Google’s earthquake alert system available in India?

Yes. Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts System has been available in India since September 2023.

According to Google, the feature was launched in consultation with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The system is designed to automatically send earthquake warning alerts to Android users when seismic activity is detected nearby.

How does Google’s earthquake alert system work?

Google’s system does not predict earthquakes. Instead, it detects the initial shaking after an earthquake begins.

Every Android smartphone is equipped with tiny accelerometers capable of sensing ground movement. When a phone is plugged in and charging, these sensors can detect earthquake-related vibrations. If multiple Android devices in the same area register similar shaking simultaneously, the information is transmitted to Google’s servers.

The servers analyse the data to determine whether an earthquake is occurring and estimate its magnitude and epicentre. If confirmed, warning alerts are sent within seconds to Android devices in nearby regions, often reaching users before stronger shaking arrives because internet signals travel much faster than seismic waves.

In India, the alerts are available in Android-supported regional languages.

How can Android users receive earthquake alerts?

To receive earthquake alerts in India, users need:

  • An Android smartphone running Android 5.0 or later
  • An active Wi-Fi or mobile data connection
  • Location services enabled
  • Android Earthquake Alerts turned on in the device settings

Users who prefer not to receive these notifications can disable the feature through their phone’s settings.

More than just emergency alerts

Apart from sending warning notifications, Google also provides earthquake-related information through Google Search. Users searching terms such as “earthquake near me” can access details about recent seismic activity along with official safety guidance.

The recent alerts issued during the Venezuela earthquakes have renewed interest in early warning technology. While these systems cannot forecast earthquakes before they occur, they can provide people with a few crucial seconds of warning after a quake begins, depending on their distance from the epicentre.
