Dhaka : The Chief Advisor of the Government of Bangladesh on Saturday said that the Rapid Action Battalion arrested seven suspects in the case of lynching and killing a Hindu man named Dipu Das. Sanatan Dharma adherent youth Dipu Chandra Das (27) in Valuka, Mymensingh, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested seven individuals as suspects. The arrested individuals are— Md. Limon Sarkar (19), Md. Tarek Hossain, Md. Manik Mia, 4 Ershad Ali (39), Nijum Uddin (20), Alomgir Hossain, and Md. Miraj Hossain Akon.
The action came two days after a mob accused Das, a garment factory worker, of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad and attacked him around 9 pm. They allegedly beat Dipu Chandra Das to death, tied his body to a tree, and set it on fire. Police later arrived at the spot, brought the situation under control, and recovered the body. The interim government of Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, earlier condemned the lynching and the death of the garment worker.
Meanwhile, the lynching came against the backdrop of nationwide protests and unrest in Bangladesh following the death of radical political activist and Sharif Osman Hadi, who succumbed to gunshot injuries while undergoing treatment in Singapore. Hadi, a candidate in the upcoming February 12 general elections, succumbed to his injuries at a Singapore hospital after six days of intensive treatment.
The lynching of Das triggered a reaction in West Bengal, as the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party condemned the incident, flagging concerns about the safety of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. It also drew a parallel to the Mamata Banerjee regime, raising fingers at her alleged inability to protect Hindu lives in the state. This is how a Hindu, Dipu Chandra Das, was lynched, hanged, and burnt in Bangladesh last night.
