Delhi Government Announces Plans To Install Air Purifiers In 10,000 Classrooms of Government Schools

New Delhi : In a significant step to protect children from worsening air pollution, the Delhi government has announced plans to install air purifiers in 10,000 classrooms of government schools in the first phase of a city-wide initiative. Sood said that tenders for the installation will be issued today, marking the beginning of a phased rollout aimed at ensuring clean indoor air for students studying in government-run schools across the national capital.

The first phase will cover 10,000 classrooms, after which the project will be expanded to include all classrooms in Delhi government schools. In the next phase, air purifiers will be installed in every classroom of government schools. We do not play with children’s breathing, nor will we allow anyone to do so,” Sood said, underlining the government’s focus on student health and safety.

The announcement comes as Delhi continues to grapple with high pollution levels, with air quality frequently slipping into the ‘very poor’ and ‘severe’ categories. Children are among the most vulnerable to air pollution, facing increased risks of respiratory illnesses, asthma, and long-term lung damage. Pollution levels have triggered emergency measures, including restrictions on construction activity, curbs on vehicular movement, and changes to school functioning, especially for younger students.

By installing air purifiers in classrooms, the Delhi government aims to improve indoor air quality, ensuring that students are not exposed to harmful particulate matter while attending school. Officials indicated that classroom installations will be carried out in a planned and monitored manner to ensure effectiveness.
