Ahmedabad : The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has busted a major espionage network and arrested two individuals – a woman and a former Army subedar – for allegedly leaking sensitive, security-related information to Pakistani intelligence operatives. Arrests were made from two separate locations during a coordinated operation. Rashmin Ravindra Pal, identified as the woman spy, was detained from Daman, while AK Singh, a former Indian Army subedar, was arrested from Goa.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that both accused were in direct touch with Pakistan-based intelligence handlers and were actively involved in anti-national activities. Singh is accused of facilitating financial support to Pakistani operatives and helping channel funds as part of the espionage network. Officials said the duo was engaged in gathering and sharing classified details related to sensitive locations. The ATS is now probing the wider network, including how much information has already been compromised and whether more individuals are linked to the operation.
The probe revealed that the key accused — Manu Agwan and Maninder Billa, currently in Malaysia — were recruiting operatives in Punjab on the instructions of Pakistan’s ISI to carry out grenade attacks in crowded areas in Punjab and other states, the ATS added. Punjab Police learnt about Singh’s alleged role in smuggling two grenades and two pistols as part of the conspiracy. Acting on the input, an ATS team reached Halol and found that Singh had taken up work as a labourer in a local factory. He was detained from a hotel and brought in for questioning, during which he admitted to his involvement in the grenade-attack plot, officials said.
In a statement, the ATS said Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi Billa was picked up from Halol town in Panchmahal district following a specific input from Punjab Police. He will be handed over to Punjab Police. A case was recently registered in Gurdaspur against individuals involved in smuggling and detonating grenades and aiding cross-border terror networks, the statement said.
