New Delhi : Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday hit back at the FIR registered against him and other MPs over the Opposition’s protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. 45 FIRs have been registered against me; I want 100 FIRs to be registered against me. Every FIR is like a medal for me, Rahul Gandhi said in Delhi.
Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition MPs headed towards Jantar Mantar for the anti-CEC protest on Wednesday. Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla said INDIA bloc MPs were being stopped from reaching Jantar Mantar. We are being stopped. We want Gyanesh Kumar to be arrested and an FIR be registered against him because he snatched away people’s rights… The entire nation is hitting the streets and Rahul Gandhi has raised the ‘vote chori’ issue everywhere, Aujla said.
The latest protest comes a day after Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several INDIA bloc leaders were detained following an hours-long sit-in near the Election Commission office in New Delhi. The Opposition had attempted to march from Parliament towards the Election Commission headquarters, demanding a meeting with the poll panel and raising allegations concerning electoral rolls.
The Election Commission and the BJP have consistently denied wrongdoing in the SIR process, and Delhi Police has not detailed the sections invoked in the Akashvani Bhawan FIR in the statements issued so far. Their reactions to Wednesday’s protest and to Gandhi’s demand for Kumar’s resignation will be closely watched in the following days. For the opposition, the pattern is now complete.
Leaders across the INDIA bloc argue that the government, the poll body and the Delhi Police are working in step to shield Gyanesh Kumar and to restrict both the right to vote and the right to protest, citing the FIRs, the closed doors at the Election Commission and the blocked march routes.
