BJP Leads Early in West Bengal and Assam Election results

Vote counting for the 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry commenced at 8 am on Monday, with results expected to emerge progressively throughout the day. Among the contests, West Bengal has drawn the most intense scrutiny following a fiercely competitive campaign.

In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) is seeking a fourth consecutive term, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a determined bid to dislodge the incumbent. The election was marked by debates over the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists, substantial deployment of central forces, and isolated incidents of violence. Early trends from the Election Commission showed the BJP maintaining a lead in several seats. As per reports, the BJP was ahead in around 40 constituencies, with the TMC leading in about 19 at one stage. Chief Minister Banerjee was trailing in her Bhowanipore constituency against BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, who also held an edge in Nandigram.

In Tamil Nadu, the focus has centered on the performance of actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which is making its electoral debut. Early indications suggested TVK could emerge as a significant force, potentially displacing the AIADMK as the main opposition to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Vijay held a lead in Tiruchirappalli East, with his party showing promise in multiple seats. The DMK alliance remained competitive, particularly in Chennai areas through postal ballots.

Assam is witnessing the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) seeking a third straight term under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was leading comfortably in Jalukbari. Early trends favored the NDA. Congress president Gaurav Gogoi noted that the initial numbers represented only the start of the counting process.

Kerala’s results are testing the state’s tradition of alternating power between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF). Early trends after EVM counting showed a close contest, with the UDF holding a slight advantage in a number of seats. The BJP-led NDA is aiming to increase its presence.

In Puducherry, attention is on whether the NDA, led by the All India N.R. Congress and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, can retain power, with a notable contest in Thattanchavady.

Overall, these outcomes will reveal whether long-standing political patterns hold or if new shifts are emerging across the regions. The Election Commission is providing real-time updates, and counting continues under tight security. Trends remain fluid as more rounds are tallied. (Word count: 352)
